This role is responsible for ensuring the delivery of high-quality nursing services at primary healthcare (PHC) facilities. The Assistant Manager will lead staff, oversee operational planning, and implement service improvement initiatives to enhance patient outcomes.

This position is key to Gauteng’s healthcare strategy, focusing on equitable and cost-effective healthcare delivery, supporting both clinical and administrative functions in the PHC environment.

Requirements

Candidates must meet the following minimum qualifications and experience:

  • Basic Qualification: Diploma or Degree in Nursing (R425 qualification) enabling registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC).
  • Post-Basic Qualification: At least 1-year specialty accreditation with SANC relevant to PHC setting.
  • Management Qualification: Health Service Management or Nursing Administration (minimum 1-year accredited).

Experience:

  • Minimum 10 years of recognized nursing experience post-SANC registration.
  • At least 6 years in the PHC setting after obtaining post-basic qualification.
  • Minimum 3 years at management level, demonstrating leadership and operational oversight.

Skills & Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of the Nursing Act, Public Service Regulations, Basic Conditions of Employment Act, Labour Relations Act, PFMA, and Treasury Regulations.
  • Strong leadership, decision-making, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication, report writing, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to manage teams effectively, implement policies, and monitor performance.
  • Computer literacy and a valid driver’s license.

  • Duties and Responsibilities
  • The Assistant Manager Nursing Area will:
  • Ensure comprehensive, efficient, and equitable nursing services at PHC facilities.
  • Promote compliance with professional and ethical standards set by SANC.
  • Lead quality improvement initiatives and monitor service performance metrics.
  • Manage human, financial, and material resources to maintain facility efficiency.
  • Supervise staff, address grievances, implement disciplinary measures, and enforce Performance Management and Development System (PMDS).
  • Monitor absenteeism and staff compliance, ensuring workforce stability.
  • Ensure adherence to clinical guidelines, Office of Health Standards Compliance requirements, and Ministerial priorities.
  • Support PHC re-engineering programs and implement service and quality improvement plans.
  • Prepare and submit detailed reports: daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annually.
  • Maintain patient-focused care through compliance with the Batho Pele Principles and the Patient’s Rights Charter.
