The Food Service Manager will oversee all food service operations, ensuring quality control, compliance with statutory requirements, and effective team management. This role requires proficiency in leadership, communication, and operational management.

Requirements

To be eligible, candidates must meet the following criteria:

  • Educational Qualification: An appropriate Diploma/Degree in Food Service Management, Food and Beverages, or Hospitality Management
  • Experience: Minimum of 5 years relevant experience, preferably in a hospital or similar environment
  • Competencies:
    • Operations and basic computer literacy
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
    • Prior knowledge of stock and key control
    • Strong interpersonal, analytical, and problem-solving skills
    • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team under pressure
    • Effective leadership skills
    • Knowledge of Public Service Act and regulations, Basic Conditions of Employment Act, National and Provincial Policy Framework, and PFMA
    • Good financial management knowledge, quality survey knowledge, presentation, and conflict management skills
  • Other: Valid driver’s license

Key Duties and Responsibilities

The Food Service Manager will be responsible for overseeing food services, staff, and operational compliance. Main duties include:

  • Manage food service operations in line with Food Based Guidelines (FBG), focusing on portion control, quality, and service standards
  • Oversee food preparation and serving of meals and refreshments
  • Monitor and manage stock levels, conducting monthly stocktaking and implementing key control policies
  • Maintain working relations with the Dietetic Department to ensure a coordinated approach to patient nutrition
  • Compile all reports and ensure compliance with statutory requirements
  • Monitor audit tools for compliance
  • Ensure equipment is functioning and adhere to Occupational Health and Safety (OHS), Environmental Health Practices (EHP), and Infection Prevention Control (IPC) standards
  • Promote customer care within the food service unit
  • Maintain high levels of hygiene and cleanliness in the unit
  • Compile performance documents (PMDS) and conduct quarterly staff performance reviews
  • Develop and maintain Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for the unit
