Job Overview

The Department of Health invites applications for the position of Head Clinical Unit (Medical) Grade 1-2 (Internal Medicine). This role is a joint appointment between the University of Pretoria (Faculty of Health Sciences, Department of Internal Medicine) and Steve Biko Academic Hospital.

The successful candidate will provide strategic and operational leadership, oversee clinical services, facilitate teaching, guide research initiatives, and manage academic administration within the Gastroenterology Unit.

Salary and Employment Details

Grade 1: R2,084,754.00 per annum plus benefits
Grade 2: R2,279,559.00 per annum plus benefits

Minimum Requirements

Candidates must meet the following requirements:

  • Senior/National Senior Certificate (Grade 12)
  • Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) plus MMed (Internal Medicine) or FCP (SA)
  • Registration with HPCSA as a Medical Specialist Physician with current registration valid from 01 April 2025 to 31 March 2026
  • Minimum five (5) years experience as a Medical Specialist Physician after HPCSA registration
  • Additional qualification in Gastroenterology preferred
  • Minimum three (3) years post-specialization experience in clinical gastroenterology practice
  • Experience in managing and coordinating clinical services, teaching, and supervising undergraduate and postgraduate students
  • Evidence of research activity and peer-reviewed publications
  • Master’s degree or PhD in a relevant field preferred
  • Knowledge of government policies, regulations, and acts
  • Strong administrative, leadership, interpersonal, and communication skills

Duties and Responsibilities

The appointed Head Clinical Unit will:

Leadership and Clinical Oversight:

  • Provide strategic and operational leadership for the Gastroenterology Unit
  • Ensure high standards of clinical care and patient safety
  • Implement clinical governance standards across hospital and academic settings

Teaching and Research:

  • Supervise undergraduate and postgraduate students
  • Promote research activities and facilitate publications
  • Mentor registrars and junior specialists

Management and Administration:

  • Manage human resources including consultants, medical officers, and nursing staff
  • Oversee financial and material resources
  • Represent the unit in departmental, faculty, and hospital committees
  • Contribute to policy development and service planning

Operational Duties:

  • Perform diagnostic and therapeutic procedures
  • Supervise clinical technology students and equipment management
  • Participate in after-hours emergency call-outs
